117. BENJAMIN WYNKOOP8 HARDENBERGH DR. (Geradus7, Johannes6Hardenberg, Johannes5Hardenbergh, Gerrit Jansz4, Jan Jacobsz3van Hardenbergh, Jacob Joppen2van Hardenberch, Job Hendricxsz1);915 born 25 August 1773 at Kingston, Ulster County, New York;916,917 married Cornelia Wynkoop 1 November 1796 at Marbletown, Ulster County, New York; Cornelia Wynkoop was Benjamin Hardenbergh's cousin;918,919 died 6 September 1848 at age 75;920 buried at Neversink-Velie Cemetery, near Liberty,, New York.921

He was on the 1800 census as head of household taken on 2 May 1800 at Havisiam Township, Ulster County, New York,,. The data found was BENJAMIN HARDENBERGH: 1 Male under 10 (Cornelius, age 2); 1 Male 16 and under 26 (unknown person, probably a relative); 1 Male 26 and under 45 (Benjamin, age 26); 1 Female under 10 (Nancy, age 5 1/2 months); 1 Female 16 and under 26 (probably Cornelia Wynkoop, however according to the birth date I have she should be age 30); 2 Slaves.922 He was on the 1810 census as head of household taken on 1810 at Marbletown, Ulster County, New York,,. The data found was BENJAMIN HARDENBERGH, 3 males under 10 (4 children in this family fall in this category. They are: Johannes, age 9; Geradus, age 5; Evert, age 2; Martine, age 1), 1 male 10 and under 16 (Cornelius, age 13), 1 male 26 and under 45 (Benjamin, age 37), 1 female under 10 (Cornelia, age 7), 1 female 10 and under 16 (Nancey, age 11), 1 female 16 and under 26 (unknown, possibly a relative), 1 female 26 and under 45 (Cornelia, age 41), 1 female 45 and up (unknown, probably a parent to Benjamin or Cornelia), 3 slaves, 13 total persons.

There are several problems with this census record. First, there are four males who fall into the category of males under 10, yet the census only list 3. If you move Johannes up to the next category, then an extra person will be in the 10 and under 16 group. There were 5 males listed on the census record, yet there are 6 males in this family during 1810, so it is my conclusion that the count for males under 10 should have been 4 instead of 3. There are two extra females in the census records that are not part of this family. I have no match for the 1 females 16 and under 26, so possibly this is a neice. I have no match for the 1 female 45 and up, so probably one parent of Benjamin or Cornelia was living with the family. Benjamin's father, Geradus, died in 1808, so it seems probable that his mother, Nancy Ryerson, was living with them. She is also not listed as head of household in the 1810 census, which means she would be living with someone else. At this time, I do not know the parents of Cornelia Wynkoop to determine if one of them was living with this family.923 He was on the 1820 census as head of household taken on 6 August 1820 at Neversink, Sullivan County, New York,,. The data found was BENJAMIN HARDENBERGH, 2 males under 10 (Abraham, age 4), 1 male 10 and under 16 (Martin, age 10; Evert, age 11; Geradus, age 15), 1 male 16 and under 26 (Johannes, age 18; Cornelius, age 22), 1 male 45 and up (Benjamin, age 46), 1 female 16 and under 26 (Cornelia, age 16; Nancy, age 20), 3 in agriculture.

It is hard to categorize the individuals of this family to the 1820 census record. I have placed names in each category of which they should fall in. As you can see, I only have 1 male under 10. Probably Martin was also included in this group even though he was 10 at the time of the census. Since there are more children in this family than appear on the census reocrds, I assume that several of the children had left home by 1820. Benjamin's wife, Cornelia, is not accounted for in the 1820 census. I have her still living at this time, so either the census is wrong or she died before this census. If she did die before 1820, then Thomas Hardenbergh (b. 1826) is not the son of Benjamin and Cornelia Hardenbergh. Possibly, Benjamin remarried before 1826 (see 1830 census record). There are 5 males listed in the 1820 census, yet there are 7 males in the family. Probably Cornelius (age 22) and Johnannes (age 18) left home. There is a Cornelius listed in the 1820 census that needs to be checked. There is no Johannes listed, but there are several John Hardenbergh's. They need to be checked to see if any is 18. This still does not account for the other figures. If I move Martin (age 10) to the under 10 category and Geradus (age 15) to the 16 and under 26 category, the figures look good. However, the box for males 16-18 was not checked. One female is listed on the census records, yet there were two females in the family. I assume Nancy (age 20) left home. The 1820 census for William Grant, her husband, needs to be checked.924 He was on the 1830 census as head of household taken on 1830 at at an unknown place . The data found was BENJAMIN HARDENBERGH, 1 black male of 30 and under 40, 1 black females of 24 and under 30, 2 total people in household. The information for this census reocrds does not make sense. Only black individuals are listed on census. I need to look at this film again to see if I copied the information wrong. I do have a paper copy and it appears to be as I stated.925 He was on the 1840 census as head of household taken on 1840 at at an unknown place . The data found was BENJ HARDENBERGH, 1 male 10 and under 15 (Thomas age 14), 2 males 20 and under 30 (Abram age 25, possibly Martin age 31), 2 females 30 and under 40 (Cornelia age 37), 5 total people, 2 in agriculture. This record does not seem to match this family. First, there is no male over 45, which is the category Benjamin Hardenbergh would be in. This was the only listing for Benjamin Hardenbergh I found in the New York index. There is no listing in Pennsylvania index for this year. Possibly Benjamin remarried after the 1820 census (see 1820 census) and one of the females 30 and under 40 would be his second wife, mother to Thomas Hardenbergh. I will keep the information with this person until I can prove it does not belong with this family. Since census records have errors, it is possible this is Benjamin W. Hardenbergh's census record and it can at least be used for location.

Looking at all the census records for Benjamin Hardenbergh between 1800 and 1840 there are quite a few questions that need to be answered. Is each census reocrd for the same individual? Why are white males and females listed in 1820 and 1840, but not in 1830? When did Cornelia (Benjamin's wife) die? Did he remarry, which would account for changes in females ages? If anyone can answer these questions, I would appreciate hearing from you.
